The Alma Inn at Linton in Herefordshire

Welcome

You will find The Alma in the centre of Linton village, close to the spired church of St. Mary with it's ancient yew trees.

This is a free house - run by Graham and Linda Webb since 1997 - in a true traditional way with no meals being served. Emphasis is on providing a convivial atmosphere where everyone, male or female, feels comfortable from any age group and from all walks in life. There is a pool table, bar billiards and darts board. There are no fruit machines, nor is there a juke-box. Background music is provided and may be requested.

The pub gets its name from the Crimean War and the battle of the river Alma in 1854. Parts of the building date from the early 17th century, but the feel inside is Victorian. There are two bars, one of which is non-smoking.

Just occasionally, food will be prepared for a special event or function, but the aim is primarily to serve quality drinks in top condition. The Alma has been voted Pub Of The Year (in 2002) and has also been placed second during the past four years Herefordshire CAMRA awards.

Currently there are two regular Real Ales (Butcombe Bitter and RCH Pitchfork) on offer with two, three and sometimes four other ales as well. The guest beers are selected by way of popular demand, tend to be drawn from the smaller and relatively local breweries.

The Linton Festival of Music and Ale

The Alma also helps sponsor the annual open-air midsummer Linton Festival (full name Linton Festival of Music and Ale). The Festival is held in the grounds at the rear of the pub over the weekend closest to mid-summer's day.

The festival is very well run by an enthusiastic committee of volunteers. Their efforts have seen the festival go from strength to strength with more famous bands appearing, increased audiences from year to year and more money for local causes from the proceeds. The 2004 festival with Friday sold out (maximum 750 tickets), Saturday 710 tickets sold - and Sunday justifying a much more ambitious line up, had ticket sales nearly double at almost 450.

The larger beer tent and the new token system combined to keep everything flowing!

Footnote by Graham and Linda

It you should find yourself in Linton at lunchtime between 12noon and 2.30pm on a weekday, Monday-Friday, and you are gasping for a pint - knock at the back door, we will be happy to pour you one if we are in. We are nearly always at home.

We think of this as our Home not a pub with living accommodation upstairs. We welcome everyone who respects this!
