Linton Music Festival raises £10,000 for local causes

Success of the 2008 Linton Music Festival generates £10,000 for local charitable and voluntary organisations.

Representatives of 15 local charities gathered at the Alma Inn, Linton near Ross-on-Wye last Friday night to receive donations totalling £10,000 raised as a result of the 2008 Linton Music Festival.

The festival, now in its 8th year, is organised by a team of local volunteers and is non-profit organisation with a policy of supporting local charitable and voluntary organisations. Since 2001, the festival has raised in excess of £50,000, all of which has been distributed to the benefit of the local community.

Bill Sparkes, a member of the festival organising committee presented the cheques. During the presentation, he thanked the festival sponsors, many of whom were present, for their continued support. He also thanked members of the nominated charities who had helped in the organisation of the festival weekend.

The Linton Festival was started in 2001 when some of the regulars of The Alma Inn realised it would be cheaper to get The Producers to come to Linton, rather than hire a mini bus and drive all the way to Poole in Dorset.

In the 6 years that The Linton Festival has been staged, it has been able to support numerous local charities including;

Linton Brownies

For the last 2 years the Brownie pack has received donations to help towards the running costs of the pack.

Lea Brownies

For the last 2 years the Brownie pack has received donations to help towards the running costs of the pack.

Lea Pre-School

The money donated will be used to help with the running costs of the groups.

Gorsley Preschool and Play Group

The money donated will be used to help with the running costs of the groups.

Aspire

This charity works with disabled young people

Forest of Dean Hospice

The Great Oaks Dean Forest Hospice provides a range of palliative and supportive care services for those with severe diseases such as cancer and progressive conditions such as motor neurone disease.

Other charities supported in the past have been:

Aston Ingham Scout Group

The scouts have been one of the main benefactors from the festival with the money donated they have been able to buy new tents, cookers and start renovating the scout hut by putting in a new wooden floor..

Salter's Hill, Pound Farm, Gorsley

Salter's Hill is a charitable organisation for the benefit of adults with learning disabilities. In the past the farm has used the money donated to them to buy a cow which has since had a calf. This year the money will go towards building work to create three new flats for the residents.

Herefordshire Wild Life Trust

This is a new charity that the festival is supporting.

Tujuane Kenya/UK student exchange

This charity supports students from three local secondary schools to take part in exchange visits to Kenya.

Linton Village Community

Each year the festival will support a project in the Village of Linton. This year we are making a donation to the Church Bell Fund. In the past money has been donated to the church, Village Hall and the Parish Council towards work needed to restore the Village pound.

Newent Disabled Group.

Hereford College for the blind.

Forest of Dean Music Makers.

Gorsley Youth Club.

S.C.B.U The special care baby unit in Hereford Hospital.

In return for the Festivals support, many of the groups help with the running of the Festival over the weekend. The Festival Committee would like to thank the groups for their help and support over the Festival weekend.
